Thelittleorange,

From watching the weather forecasts this winter seems sure is cold where you are. For us who only know rain and sunshine we can’ t imagine what that degree of coldness can mean. Hope you are keeping yourself warm and comfortable.

Your post gave me an excuse to go digging through the collection of the Cleveland Memory Project.
Not bad income for an abandoned building!

Seeing it today, it really is in bad shape. Sad -- it looks like it was quite cute back in its day, and if it's an official Historic Place, I wonder if it's even possible to restore.

I'm certainly no advertising expert, but I do know that the billboard changes fairly frequently (Google Street View shows a Yellow Tail ad). It's a high-profile location, visible to downtown commuters and to people attending events at Gateway. The property's tax bill for half a year is roughly $6,000, so it's probably safe to assume that the billboard generates more than $1,000 per month for the building owner.

Thank you so much! I surfed the web for the information but didn't turn anything up, so I'm glad you came along.

I walked by today and saw that the billboard advertises Cruzan Rum. Considering that it's not Coca Cola or even Bacardi, it can't be *that* lucrative, can it? Or maybe Cruzan is out of my league and that's why I'd never heard of it before.

You've found one of the oldest buildings in downtown Cleveland. The County Auditor's records say it was built in 1863. It's been vacant for a long time. According to one site, it's called the Stanley Block and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The official National Park Service list makes no mention of it. It's odd.

If the condition of the interior is similar to the exterior, the building needs a lot of work. I suspect that one reason the building is still standing is because the large billboard on its south side generates a lot of income.

You could install OpenOffice. It's free and should give the users a bit more experience word processing than Wordpad.
